Fresh and organic vegetables at farmers market

Farmers Markets

Fresh and Local Food for Everyone.

The availability of locally grown food at farmers markets is growing and communities are benefitting from the cooking demonstrations, music, nutrition education, and activities for children which are becoming more common in our modern markets.

SNAP/EBT and SNAP Double Bucks

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) offers nutrition assistance to eligible, low-income individuals, including children, senior citizens, and families.  SNAP helps households improve food security, reducing the number of people who skip meals because they don't have the money or resources to buy enough food. In Mecklenburg County, SNAP is also known as Food and Nutrition Services.

The SNAP Double Bucks program helps community members make the most of their SNAP benefits at farmers markets by providing a dollar-for-dollar match to purchase fresh, local produce. Sponsored by Mecklenburg County Public Health’s Food Security Program, the SNAP Double Bucks program focuses on improving access to healthy food for county residents. The program is implemented through a partnership with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Food Policy Council and participating farmers markets.
