Safe Handling Procedures for EVD and Other HCP Contaminated Remains

This course was designed to provide guidance to personnel who perform postmortem care regarding the safe handling of human remains that may be contaminated with Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) or other high consequence pathogens (HCP). This includes, but is not limited to, those working in funeral homes, crematories, mortuaries, morgues, or any other service which includes directly handling human remains.

  • The objectives for this course include the following:

  • Overview of HCP’s and how they can be transmitted in postmortem settings

  • Guidelines for preparing and transporting contaminated remains

  • Guidelines for providing mortuary care and disposition of remains

  • Overview and donning/doffing of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)

  • Guidelines for cleaning, decontamination, and waste management
