Holistic Opportunities Program For Everyone

Our mission is to integrate behavioral health services into public health settings to holistically identify and address an individual's physical, nutritional, and behavioral health needs.

Through a partnership between UNC at Charlotte and MCPH within the Academy for Population Health Innovation, a 2017 pilot study was conducted to determine the prevalence of depression among postpartum WIC clients. About 24% of women screened positive, well above the national rate of postpartum depression (13%). Many women demonstrated a need for behavioral health services, but many also had limited access due to social and structural barriers.

To address this need, the Holistic Opportunity Program for Everyone (H.O.P.E.) was created. With support from the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners, we were able to hire two full-time on-site behavioral health providers. Although the initial program launch was delayed due to COVID-19, we relaunched in July of 2021, and the program is now implemented in our Family Planning and WIC clinics as well as Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program, HIV Fast-Track Testing, and Maternal Child Health, among others.

Our VISION is building a community in which everyone has access to the holistic physical, nutritional, and behavioral health services that they need and desire.

Our MISSION is to integrate behavioral health services into public health settings to holistically identify and address an individual's physical, nutritional, and behavioral health needs.

What is a Behavioral Health Provider?

Behavioral health providers (BHPs) are committed to increasing accessibility to mental health services for those most in need, with a special focus on supporting perinatal women. The BHPs use their training in social work to address each client's unique social determinants of health and destigmatize seeking help.

BHPs provide their clients with more than counseling and mental health services: behavioral health providers can help by connecting clients with safe housing, SNAP (Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program), and addressing other social determinants of health and wellness needs.
