Mobile Units

An innovative program that uses two mobile clinical units and one mobile dental unit to advance our community health initiatives.

Meck Health in Action (MHiA) is an innovative program that uses two mobile clinical units and one mobile dental unit to advance our community health initiatives. All three mobile units function as extensions of the Mecklenburg County Public Health department in our community.

Mobile Clinical Units

Both mobile units, in addition to our mobile dental unit,  function as extensions of the Mecklenburg County health department in our community.  MHiA’s mobile clinical units are fully prepared to offer community-based testing and education services as well as vaccinations. In addition to these services, MHiA distributes a variety of resources throughout the County in collaboration with neighborhood associations, schools, faith-based organizations, and community-based organizations. More than 13,000 Mecklenburg County residents have benefited from MHiA since it began operating in the county in the fall of 2023.

Highlights of MHiA include the following:

  • Expanded services to include harm reduction and HIV/STD testing.
  • Health education workshops covering subjects like managing chronic illnesses, mental health, vaccinations, sexual health, respiratory health, and maternal health awareness.
  • Mobile clinics resulting in vaccinations for more than 1,200 residents.
  • Community health fairs supporting health literacy and disease prevention in our community.
  • Partnerships that improve collaboration, access to services, and  health equity.

Mobile Dental Unit

The mobile dental unit prides itself in “Meeting you where you are.” Our focus is breaking down barriers and improving health outcomes for our pediatric population. The mobile dental unit, the newest addition to the MHiA program, is equipped with 3 treatment chairs and is staffed by a dentist and a dental hygienist. This allows us to offer services like dental exams, cleanings, and sealants to our pediatric patients. In partnership with a select group of 15 Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools, the mobile unit launched in February 2025 and aims to increase healthcare access and equity for hundreds of children who need dental care.

  • Pediatric patients are those between 1 and 17 years of age.
  • The services rendered in the mobile dental unit are low cost and affordable.
  • After a patient receives treatment on the mobile unit, if it is determined that more comprehensive care is required, the patient will be referred to the Mecklenburg County Dental Clinic for continuation of care.
  • Prices for services rendered at the Mecklenburg County Dental Clinic are determined on a sliding-fee scale, which is based on household income.
