First Clade I Mpox in the United States and Mecklenburg County Mpox Wastewater Surveillance Nov. 21, 2024
California reported the first case of clade I mpox in the United States this weekend in an individual with a travel history to an African region currently reporting a clade I mpox outbreak. Mecklenburg County Public Health is closely monitoring the presence of mpox in our community. Recent wastewater surveillance data indicates that what is likely clade II mpox is still circulating in Mecklenburg County. Based on this information Public Health would like to share the following.

- Local Impact: Mecklenburg County reported the highest number of mpox detections among North
Carolina's 19 wastewater surveillance sites from June 10th, 2024, to October 28th, 2024. - Global Connection: The recent laboratory-confirmed case of Clade I mpox in California highlights the
importance of staying informed about global health trends. - Prevention: Vaccination remains the most effective way for individuals to protect themselves from
mpox. - Travel Precautions: Individuals planning to travel to African regions affected by the Clade I mpox
outbreak, should take necessary precautions and consult with healthcare providers for specific advice.
What You Can Do:

- Encourage Vaccination: If your patients are eligible, encourage mpox vaccination.
- Testing: Test all suspected cases for mpox and instruct individuals to isolate.
